Chocolicious

Chocolicious: drink trends 2025

With the recent growth of treat missions and drink only occasions**, consumers are looking for affordable luxuries when they eat out, particularly with premium chocolate.

What’s the Chocolicious trend all about?

The Chocolicious trend reflects the innovation we’re seeing dominate the hot drinks (and dessert) category at the moment. From premium chocolate drinks to luxurious chocolate desserts – there are a variety of extravagant options tempting consumers right now.

The “lipstick effect” is a key driver of this trend, which relates to the insight that during economic downturns, consumers often seek comfort and control by switching from larger, more expensive purchases to smaller, more affordable luxuries, for example buying a lipstick rather than a whole outfit. This is supported by additonal research that states 81% of consumers see chocolate as an affordable treat*** and 38% of consumers consider hot chocolate as a low-cost way to boost their mood****.

We already know hot chocolate is enjoyable on its own, but we discovered so much more the chocolate trend has to offer to consumers.

3 things you need to know about the Chocolicious trend

  • Premium appeal

    • We found that premium hot chocolate, white hot chocolate and flavoured hot chocolate, as well as mochas are the hot drinks that consumers tell us they are most interested in trying in the next 1 to 2 years.

    • Example of exciting options we’re seeing on menus include black forest frozen hot chocolate, strawberry white frozen hot chocolate and crème brule inspired frappes.

  • Innovative toppings and flavours

    • Innovation is driving this trend, as it elevates a hot drink from ordinary to extraordinary.

    • Consumers tell us they would be willing to pay more for a premium drink with exciting toppings, i.e. marshmallows, whipped cream and/or sprinkles, so it’s no surprise we’re seeing drinks such as a deluxe hot chocolate smore on menus

  • Exclusivity

    • Drink only occasions are also driving this trend, as recent data suggests that this occasion has grown in the last year, with operators using novelty, exclusivity and limited-editions to grab consumers’ attention.

    • Consumers are likely to pay more for a premium hot chocolate in seated indoor venues such as bars, pubs and casual or formal dining restaurants.

    • Whilst this trend appeals to treat-led consumers, there is a slightly higher appeal for 18-34 year olds.

4 ways to leverage the Chocolicous trend

  • Add a premium touch to current menu items

    • Take the staple desserts on your menu and elevate them with a premium touch to save time and resource instead of adding a completely new product to the menu.

    • Just over 10% of consumers would pay more for a drink made by an expert, so showcasing expertly crafted drinks will capture the attention of consumers

  • Customisation and extra’s

    • Give customers the option to customise their drink/desserts with premium add-ons such as syrups, spices, sauces and marshmallow toppings which can be added to both drinks and desserts. There are plenty of upsell opportunities here too!

    • Offer fresh ingredients as toppings such as fresh fruit to appeal to the health conscious consumer – offering a pleasant balance for their guilty pleasure.

  • Presentation

    • A premium drink should appeal to the senses beyond just taste. Serve in an elegant or unique glassware, consider adding a touch of art, garnish with a cinnamon stick, citrus peel, or edible flowers to enhance the visual appeal.

    • Opportunity for pick-me-up deals during the afternoon or sweet treat deals for the evening

  • Adapt to different seasons

    • Adapt hot and cold beverage menus to the different seasons by using summer/winter syrups and summer/winter toppings, to compete with major brands.
