Consumers are also interested in next level on-the-go options to satisfy their needs as 46% tell us they would like to try hot and cold premium sandwiches when out. However, hot premium sandwiches are the most favourable with a 10% higher appeal (28% vs 18%) and provides an opportunity for menu innovation including explosive flavours, loaded fillings and quality ingredients.

3 things you need to know about Buns and Bowls

  • Hot premium sandwiches

    23% of consumers are already eating hot premium sandwiches when they’re out (+7pp for foodies), however, there is still demand that hasn’t been satisfied, with 28% still wanting to try.

    But what makes them premium? These sandwiches include loaded fillings with several ingredients either squashed between two thick slices of bread or left open-faced, providing an exciting experience at first look and first bite.

  • Nutritious savoury bowls

    Interest in nutritious bowls is gaining momentum, with 21% of consumers interested in trying energy or Buddha bowls and similar interest levels for poke bowls.

  • Innovative sweet bowls and pots

    We also predict the growth of sweeter healthy bowls as whilst roughly 6% are currently eating the likes of acai bowls or chia pots, there are still roughly 20% of consumers who would like to try them.

    These sweet choices, sometimes called smoothie pots or smoothie bowls, usually include a vibrant mix of fruit, seeds, granola, oats, jam and nut butters, which are perceived by consumers to be comforting or nutritious. Some menus also feature savoury options or bowls that combine vegetables and fruits.
